Learning outcomes

The learning path is built by intermeshing traditional disciplines (hydraulics, hydrology, sanitary engineering, structural and geotechnical engineering, spatial planning) with emerging environmental issues and problem-solving skills.

The final aim of the programme is to acquire competences for the design of

  • structures and infrastructures for land protection and water resources management
  • technologies for the management and remediation of environmental matrices (air, soil, and water)
  • sustainable actions, also in the case of conflicting use of environmental resources

and for the understanding of the processes that govern the interactions between the natural and built environment, even considering the effects of climate change. Particular emphasis is devoted to the awareness in using mathematical models and to the critical interpretation of the results of numerical simulations.

To achieve these goals, most of the courses include not only theoretical lessons, but also laboratory activities, practical exercises using technical software, and field visits. Master's degree theses address both innovative problems and applications to case studies, and are often carried out in the context of research projects or in collaboration with companies and institutions, in Italy and abroad.

The international character, thanks to the introduction of courses in English in the first year and in two of the curricula starting from the academic year 2021/22, will allow all students to be in contact, in a daily discussion, with colleagues with different experiences and backgrounds. Together with a teaching organization that fosters teamwork, students will develop the soft skills and global competences (open-mindedness, flexibility, empathy, communication skills, unconventional problem solving, conflict management) that the job market increasingly requires, also for technical jobs such as that of the engineer.

Post-graduate opportunities

Job opportunities are manifold, due to the robust training in basic disciplines and the interdisciplinary background that allow the environmental engineer to tackle always new issues. Thus, our master's graduates can work in a wide spectrum of jobs: designers, modellers, managers, often covering coordination roles in multidisciplinary groups.

Some examples of job opportunities are:

  • land protection: flood defense, slope stability, river restoration, environmental monitoring, civil protection
  • resource management: water resources management, surface and ground water remediation, urban hydraulic infrastructures
  • protection of environmental matrices: management and treatment of wastewater, waste and gaseous pollutants, remediation of contaminated sites
  • environmental planning: protection and sustainable development of environmental resources, environmental impact assessment, management of the environment in the context of international cooperation.

Graduates can also continue with a Ph.D., as well as access selections in public and private universities and research institutions, in the field of higher education and research.

A national examination is required to practice the regulated profession of Engineer in the Civil and Environmental sector in Italy.
