The course
The Master degree programme in Management and Industrial Systems Engineering aims to train engineers with the necessary skills to effectively design and manage the processes that characterize the modern production paradigms, with particular attention to the completeness of the technical background as a fundamental condition to allow these practitioners to interact with the different business units and functions.
The Master degree programme aims to train engineers with a holistic and integrated vision of industrial problems rather than an approach focused on single aspects or specific technologies. Master graduates in Management and Industrial Systems Engineering are distinguished by the ability to:
- apply tools and methodologies for the design and management of complex industrial systems
- apply modern quantitative techniques to support decision-making processes
- manage the main digital technologies at the basis of the new industrial revolution
- apply methodologies for the promotion and management of innovation
- evaluate the environmental sustainability of industrial products and processes.
The Master programme is characterized by coursers of marked originality and innovativeness. Their contents are aligned with the most recent developments in academic and industrial research that are revolutionizing modern industrial systems such as:
- product customization
- processes environmental sustainability
- digitalization of industrial plants
- quality and safety of production systems.
The course offer is integrated with laboratory experiences, elements of business culture provided through seminars, lectures and internships.
The formative activity will necessarily conclude with an original thesis, described in a paper written in English that demonstrates the mastery of the topics, the ability to operate independently as well as a good level of communication skills.
Learning outcomes
A first year of shared courses aims to provide students with a solid foundation in the disciplines characterizing engineering management and industrial systems as:
- digital production and logistics systems
- organizations
- human resources and innovation
- advanced manufacturing and sustainable products
- dynamics in systems and networks
- project management
- decision and risk analysis.
On this basis, students can differentiate their programme in the second year thanks to the offer of two curricula:
-
Tthe curriculum “Design and sustainability” is characterized by the in-depth study of engineering methodologies for the design of complex industrial systems and of innovative industrial products with a particular focus on the selection of materials. It considers the entire life cycle of products and their environmental impact, in terms of both greenhouse gases emissions and consumption of primary resources.
-
The curriculum “Management and digitalization” is aimed at training engineers oriented to the management of complex production processes, characterized by a strong adoption of digital technologies which are the basis of the current industrial revolution. This curriculum is characterized by in-depth contents in the field of business information systems, modern Internet of Things technologies for industrial applications and advanced mathematical methodologies for the optimization of complex systems.
Career opportunities
The students graduated in the Master degree programme in Management and Industrial Systems Engineering will be able to contribute effectively, working in complete autonomy and perfect coordination, to the activities of multifunctional teams for the management and development of innovative and complex projects, as well as to join specific business functions or units (production, logistics, organization, human resources, purchasing, etc.) in which the graduated student will be able to apply the acquired knowledge, even in contexts characterized by high technical and organizational complexity, highly innovative and dynamic.
The roles that can be covered with functions of responsibility by graduates are related to
- the management of industrial production and logistics systems
- automation of production processes
- selection and implementation of industrial technologies including digital applications
- quality assurance and related certification processes.
Following the maturation of specific experiences after the master degree, these professionals can take on roles ranging from the production line manager to the manager of a distribution logistics platform, from the leader of interdisciplinary teams to the manager of technological innovation projects, from the referent for process quality to the sustainability manager of a facility plant.
Thanks to the broad spectrum of acquired competences and knowledge, they will also be able to find employment in applied research, as managers of different business areas, including marketing, purchasing and human resources, complex innovation projects, as well as in consulting and service companies.
The main career opportunities for graduates in Management and Industrial Systems Engineering concern the entire manufacturing sector, the transformation and process industry, traditional services (transport, distribution, procurement) and advanced services (banking and insurance, Information Ttechnologies, telecommunications) as well as public administration.
Master graduates will be able to carry out high-level entrepreneurial activities or, after gaining specific experience, be employed in business and management consulting firms.
According to figures published by the Italian Institute of Statistics, the Master degree programme in Management and Industrial Systems Engineering contributes to the training of industrial and management engineers.
Further study opportunities after graduation
The Master degree programme has been tailored to allow students to embark upon any international post-graduate level study.
The PhD programmes offered at the University of Trento by the Department of Industrial Engineering include the Materials, Mechatronics and Systems Engineering Doctoral School.
